The Grammys: What Do You Think?
I have no authority in music, nor any particular claim to talent. I only know what I like, based on its effects: relaxation, inspiration, invigoration, and entertainment.
As last week’s Grammy Awards approached, I had no plans to make an evening of it. I did not rearrange my priorities to watch it live, and I have no intention of streaming what I missed.
From the news coverage afterward, I am glad I did not watch. Not because there was nothing I might have enjoyed, but because what was emphasized seemed largely unrelated to music. Much of it struck me as distasteful, even repulsive. The preoccupation among presenters, performers, winners, and audience members with political statements—specifically denunciations of Immigration and Customs Enforcement—felt, in my judgment, badly misplaced.
I have not asked many friends for their opinions. I would prefer a broader range of responses, uncolored by my own views. I am interested in clear answers, yes or no, rather than polite agreement.
Comments such as, “Before thanking God, I just want to say, ICE out,” may be mild compared to others that used profanity or even violent language directed toward ICE. Still, they left a strong impression. I waited a few days before writing this, hoping distance would bring objectivity.
One final observation: Justin Bieber performing in his underwear.
Honestly, did you enjoy the Grammys?
